What's the best format to copy VHS videos to disk? The VHS tapes are not the best quality but I still want to archive them.

I just bought a LITEON LDW-811S/851S and installed it on a P4 with ABIT RAID motherboard and Windows XP Prof OS. For some reasons DVDs cannot be even read - the system does not find a disk if I insert a DVD. CDs are recognized though. I also have another DVD-ROM in my computer which works...
