2 hours plus for DVD burn - what can I do next

I don't know what to do anymore, just can't seem to get DVDs to burn at any kind of normal speed. I just got the Pioneer 107D & while it works & the copies are fine it's just sooo sloooow, like 2-3 hours.

Background info

1.8G P4
900+MB memory
IDE1 40G HD master, CDRW/DVDROM slave
IDE2 107D master
PCI IDE contolller w 160GB hd
Win2K
Burning with Nero and DVDshrink both take hours.

OK I started out with the 107D as a slave on IDE2 & the 160G Hd as master, read that the 107D does not like to be a slave so got & installed the Promise IDE, put the HD on that & switched the 107D to master. No difference - well maybe a bit but it's still 2+ hours, thats buring direct from from the 40G HD.

I have an old ASPI layer to run a SCSI card in a PCI slot which runs a scanner. The ASPI was installed a couple of years ago.

Also read somewhere here that the Roxio software can cause problems - I do have that too & (but happy to get rid of it now I have Nero) it always starts up when I put in a blank DVD, I then close it & continue with Nero.

All IDE channels are showing as DMA enabled & look fine.

I've been using CD-R cheapos, did try a Sony (not cheapo) but no improvement in speed.

I'm all out of ideas now & just looking for any suggestions to try & sort this out.

Thanks to anyone who tries to help.

Thanks so far,

OK last night I removed the Roxio software, and installed a more recent ASPI layer.

Ran the Nero burn test & here's the report...

There's a couple of transfer rate tests there too which failed at the end. Not sure where the graph went either..

I hope this helps...

Try to burn a DVD(RW) with Nero, save the complete logfile of the task and attach it here please, the above log was not terribly helpful.
You may also try Nero Info Tool instead:

Hi Scarecrow, thank for following up.

I'm doing a burn now, how to get the logfile ?

FWIW there are a few more clues, this morning I've written to DVD-RW & DVD+RW with OK results. 1.5G at 4* in 6 mins to DVD+R, and 750M to DVD-R at 1* in 12 mins, both of which seem OK to me.

The burn going on now though onto DVD+R is about 3.5G so far taken 13mins & is at 12% - back to 2 hours again. I'll post th elog when it's over - be patient lol.

after burning you can find the Nero log file in the Nero installation directory it's named "NeroHistory.log"

i dont know what software installs the things below, but this is probably your trouble maker:

Code:
Driver Information
-------------
Driver : iomdisk
Description : Iomega Disk Filter Driver
Version : 2,0,1,0
Company : Iomega Corporation

Lower Filters
-------------
Driver : IOMDISK
Description : Iomega Disk Filter Driver
Version : 2,0,1,0
Company : Iomega Corporation

I believe the above drivers are related to an Iomega ZIP drive, which shouldn't be an issue...
But what could be an issue is Veritas Volume Manager which seems to be installed as well, can you confirm?
Veritas makes a series of very good programs (Volume Manager, Backup Exec, BackupMyPC, Simple Backup etc) which in fact use packet writing drivers, and as such they are quite obtrusive... Nero 6 seems to have issues with both Veritas backup programs, as well as the "RecordNow" series of mastering applications- formerly Veritas, now Sonic.

But why are they installed as CD/DVD filter drivers? Is this the common place?

I do have a Zip drive installed.

I've taken a look at the driver files & they seem to come from a Windows service pack, I've never heard of Veritas. How can I get rid of them to see if that's the problem?

Safest and fastest way would be;
Feurio is a great audio-only app, featuring excelent ripper&burner and a small diagnostic unit.It will show and give a wiev to every driver in your system. You can do lots of modifications just be carefull what you-re doing;you can disable drivers permanently or temporary,it will show which drivers got loaded, and they were made in different collors,so you can see which one is giving problems :) Btw,just to let you know roxio and nero doesent like each other,so refarain from using it on same system, even worst if you installed them with packet writers.
Roxio is a one of the biggest evils in cdr-dvd bussiness for sure, check the serch funkcion here or visit there official forum and youll see why :p
If i were you i would format the system if roxio was installed before, couse it leaves so much crap when got uninstalled so it cant be fixed-sad but trye.
Also if you install aspi, use only 4.60.1021 version couse all above(newer)can make you a problem.Nero got his own aspi so youre ok with it.Check search for aspi to install or check whats your version.
Btw,feurio is one of the cleanest proggus around. When you install it,everything stays in a program folder,no garbage goes to register, and when you uninstall it-if needed, wont leave any traces to it,so its a really a safe proggy :)
Try and download a demo couse its a fully funktionall and free for unlimited time :) :)

Hi Zver,

well I followed your advice & got Fuerio, disabled the IOMdisk driver, and now my sytem won't boot, even in safe mode. Spent most of last night tearing my hair out. I've done a bit of research today & it looks like drivers can be renabled with W2Ks recovery console feature though, so I'll be trying that later. Whether it works or not I think I'll be setting up a new XP OS, gradually or quickly depending or whether i still have W2K. Losing it would be a big bug problem. SO be warned about playing around with this kind of stuff.

too bad to hear this try failed; i didn't thought this would result in an unbootable system, anyway i trust in your testimony;

you are right about the recovery console; there switch to the "%SYSTEMROOT%\System32" directory and type in "enable iomdisk"

more about you can find there: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;229716
this procedure is similar with XP; so the only thing you need is a bootable W2k or a XP CD;

It's OK D, I've got back my system now with the recovery console. Uninstalled feurio though - get my revenge.

I think I'm just gonna have to live with the slow burns for now, but all this has shown me that my setup is full of old garbage. It's a 2/3 year old W"K which was converted from an equally old W98.

I'll be setting up a new XP partition, from scratch. I expect the DVD to work properly in there, & slowly migrate all my applications across.

Thanks for trying anyway.
