Burn (S)VCD to a DVD+R without transcoding ?

Is it possible to burn VCD or SVCD to a DVD+R without reencoding ? The idea is to fit several full length movies in a single DVD disc, instead of splitting each movie in 2-3 CDs: using the DVD disc as a "mega CD"

I have read the threads:

http://www.cdrbase.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26807&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

and:

http://www.cdrbase.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25572

but in both cases I understand that you have to convert the films to DVD compliant. The software I have tried won't burn a (S)VCD to a DVD+R ('inapropiate media').
Thanks,

@ borogovio :

when i open this thread i read some and

I got this from CDFreaks site that may be of help, I havent tried it myself yet though.

How to burn 5 SVCD/VCD (5x800MB = 4GB) on one DVD-R without reencoding anything *vobs with 44 Hz Audio*:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(translated from http://www.dvd2dvd-r.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=eBoard&file=viewthread&tid=957 )
1. Read out all the svcds/vcds to mpeg using VCDGear 3.5
BIN->MPEG | VCD Dat->MPEG
2. Demultiplex all your mpeg using TMPG, so that you extract all the audio & video streams from each mpeg
>Mpeg-Tools->Simple Demultiplex
3. Make a seperate folder for every mpeg CD
like CD1, CD2, CD3 ...
4. now tart IfoEdit->Author NEW DVD
join the two files together cd1.mpv &. cd1.mpa
5. join the chapters like this:
make a file called Celltimes.txt *use wordpad - the contant of the files looks like this (just copy this stuff into the celltimes.txt):
10000
20000
30000
40000
50000
60000
70000
80000
save this file & open it with IfoEdit under Scene changes/chapters.
now just select the destination - for part1 CD1.
(after IfoEdit is done, close it and open it again and proceed to the 2nd mpv/mpa .... and so on and on until you are done with all your svcds/vcds ;o))
6. Now we have as many VOB files as many mpeg files we had before, but now they are already vob files
7. Now make a folder called *guess what * VIDEO_TS
8. Now copy/move every vob file you have created into the
VIDEO_TS folder *but before you do that rename the files
like this*
CD1=vts01_1.vob
CD2=vts01_2.vob
and on and on until you have all your vobs, but be careful IfoEdit only goes from vts01-1.vob -> vts01_9.vob
*personally I can't confirm this as I have never tried more than 7 vobs until now *
9. IfoEdit->Create IFO
selecht the first vob file you have created "vts01_1.vob" all the others will be proceeded automaticly
(close IfoEdit again)
we are almost done now
10. Open IfoEdit & open vts01_0.ifo & now use the button Get VTS !
(close IfoEdit)
11. Open IfoEdit again & this time open the Video_ts.ifo.
You can see now the two film roles (attribute for the film)
klick twice on them and select "Automatic Letterboxed" - don't change anything else !!! Just save it for the last time
A N D Y O U A R E D O N E !!!
12. Burn the files with your favorite burn tool *I have used Nero for burning and it works like a charm with this method ;o))*
Just put the VIDEO_TS path on your DVD und you can leave out the AUDIO_TS *as you don't need it anyway*. Happy burning
Happy SVCD/VCD on DVDR with chapters
& thanks to Icewaere for his great guide in German
:D
i don't need to go there friend CM,
you did another tutorial!
;)
i don't have a dvd burner but i save this page for
future reference in one special folder!!
thank you !!!
:cool:
Thank you very much for your tutorial, CM.
I actually tried this method from step 1 to 11. Very interestingly, it works perfertly for SVCD to DVD, since it is playable in my settop player. But there is a problem with my VCDs. The audio for new DVD from VCD is playable, but video is not in settop player, although new dvd is playable in PC. I am wondering whether someone here could help me to make my VCDtoDVD playable in my standalone. Thanks.
a VCD at 352x240/288 is already in a DVD size standard (unlike SVCD's) I would convert the audio to 48khz though and author in Maestro. Have a read of the dvd to dvdr tutorial about Maestro's use
@ chickenman ... not doubting your brain capacity here lol just questioning ..surely if the DVD player can playback MPG files without making into a VCD/SVCD then can it not be just burnt onto a DVDR as multisession !? assuming that DVD burners can burn mpgs as data as a multi session !? now depending on the length of the mpgs for 1 film i know its about 1.6 gig or 2 x 800mb as a sort of average size SVCD 2 disk film ?! so maby its possible to fit 2 films (joined up mpgs that are normally burnt as svcds) with no conversion onto 1 DVDR !? assuming that multisession DVDR can be used like a CDR for burning data !? or am i just talking nonsense here !?
i do know that not ALL DVD standalones can handle VANILLA mpgs :confused: .... i just know my YAMADA UMAX 2100 can :)
maby someone out there with a DVD burner and DVDRW disk can test this !? :) cant kill anyone /thing to test eh !? :D
A DVD Player that plays vanilla MPG files is quite rare and far from the normal. But if it can play mpg off a cdr, dont expect to read them off a dvdr. MP3's on dvdr is also not playable on units that can play MP3's, as they are expecting a cdr, not a dvdr
ok bud thats that theory out the window then lol when i get a DVD burner will let ya know if it works on mine :) im happy that my YAMADA plays all the VANILLA mpgs i own hehehe handy for these whacky email mpgs and downloads that are floating around to watch on the big screen heheh :)
I always do this:
1-> extract from the cd the mpeg files with ISO Buster, every cd to a different folder
2-> then with Tmpeg (mpeg tools) Simple De-Multiplex (on every file-cd)
3-> Ifo Edit - DVD Author - Author New DVD add the video (m2v) file and audio (mp2) (on every file-cd)
4-> keep VTS_01_1.VOB file and delete all others
5-> rename the first VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_001.VOB the second (cd-folder) VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_002.VOB the third (cd-folder) VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_003.VOB and.....
6-> move all vobs to one folder and open IFO Edit - Create Ifos add the first vob (VTS_01_001.VOB) and that is...
VCD2DVDR
I used the same methods as Denexo's to put my VCDs and SVCDs into DVDR. All of them are playable in the PC, but only DVDRs from SVCD can be played in my settop (Cyberhome) and VCDs can not. When I used DVDMaestro to author my VCDs, m1v plus 48K audio, according to Chickenman's suggestion, again, these DVDRs from VCD are playable in PC but not in my Cyberhome settop. Very strangely, my Cyberhome can play audio from those DVDRs made by both methods, but not video. I tried to transcode VCD to m2v and author with either Maestro or Ifoedit, it works fine in the cyberhome. But my machine is quite slow, so I don't like taking days to re-encode video.
Does anyone get simliar problem with VCD2DVDR? Is it due to my Cyberhome which plays VCD, SVCD and DVD perfectly, or due to the authoring method?
Thanks
It works for me
I got LOTR on 4 svcds and copied the mpg:s to the harddrive renaming them to cd1.mpg and so on. Burned them on a dvd+r as a datadvd. Put it in my Dragon 100 dvdplayer and watched the movie. That player plays almost everything.
i have the same problem, with my Cyberhome dvd player. I add the mpeg1 files to dazzle dvd complete, then dazzle re-encode the audio then author and burn. But Cyberhome play only the audio from this dvdr.
For proper DVD compatability, the audio needs to be AC3 and not mp2. Although the audio plays (and not the video) but this could be confusing the player thinking its a VCD or SVCD and then that part of its firmware getting confused and unable to convert the data to a picture.
I just added 5 VCD's (demuxed and converted audio to 48khz AC3 & authored in Maestro with a Menu) to a DVDR and they playback perfectly in 3 different DVD Players and the PC with WinDVD.
