Problems with Pioneer DVR-105 (a05)

Hello
I just got my new DVR-105 from Pioneer.
I installed it - no problems
Started WinXP and it found it easily - no problems there
Now - I try to play a DVD Video (from the store) with WinDVD PLatinum and it changes the screen width, says that the audio is english and then shows nothing but a black screen. I also have a LiteOn 163D DVD-Rom player which plays everything great (with same WinDVD version). It is also not a zone issue.
I start DVDXCOPY (have version 1.3) and it reads the DVD from the Pioneer and offers a split. I either say I want to preview or say I want to start the copy process - and BOOM ... the computer restarts itself.
I thought it may be the HW. So I put an audio disc inside and it played with WMP just great. So no problem with the laser or the mechanics.
By the way - I flashed successfully in DOS mode to firmware 1.21 (latest) and the problem occured both before and after the flash. I don't think that's where the problem is.
Is there another driver that is needed for the DVR-105 or is what XP installed sufficient?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks you all in advance

my a 05 works ok with xp firmware 1.21 and win dvd you dont need any other drivers i think your problem is a software
conflict try making the a05 the default drive in win dvd make sure you have no other dvd software installed

I've been having similar issues ever since I installed my A05. My PC just reboots any time it wants to. Sometimes as soon as it gets to the desktop, sometimes 5 minutes later, sometimes after an hour. Occasionally I get the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message after she reboots, but not always. I have to click cancel on sending the message to M$ about 6 times until it goes away and stays away. The Pioneer seems to play and burn DVDs just fine though. The PC has never rebotted while the drive is burning. Also on FW 1.21. I also have DVDXCopy installed. I've completely wiped Windows and reinstalled on a brand new hard drive. Didn't help. Even changed the A05 to the secondary IDE. Hmmm...

I also got thet message...

About recovery from an Error... just like you... right after reboot...

So what do we do???
Anyone?

ps - do you also have trouble playing DVDs from the A05?

A buddy of mine just bought a PC from Dell configured with an A05. He said that it needs to be on its own IDE cable. I don't want to believe that.

@Markbot.That's not a problem.I have a Liteon 163 as master,and my Pioneer A05 as slave,no problems.Both on same (secondary)IDE cable.;)

Not sure what is happening with the other guys.

My setup is similar to Woody, my A05 is on Secondary cable as Master with my LiteOn 40x as Slave. Hasnt missed a beet since installed. But then I'm running Win2000.

The problem surely lies in your system setup and not the A05, that has just highlighted your problem. I assume you have installed some ASPI software for XP needs it to run properly? Is DMA turned on or off for the Pioneer?

More info...

I agree with your assumption ChickenMan and will take a look at the DMA when I get home today. I did install ASPI drivers and posisbly that's where the problem is.
I can now add some more conclusions:
- Woody's right. I tried moving my LiteOn as a slave to the HD on the primary IDE and leave the A05 on its own on the secondary IDE - didn't help.
- My PC's self-restart happens only when I choose Copy or Preview with DVDXCopy, and it always happens.
- Markbot, I believe that the "System has recovered from an Error" message is happenning to you when the PC restarts itself, but will not happen if you shut it down right after it restarts. Let it hang for a few secs and then start the PC again. I checked it a few times and it always worked. Probably the crash is so severe that some buffers have to be cleaned before your start again.

Now for the ASPI drivers, ChickenMan, I think I downloaded and installed new ASPI from Adaptec (winaspi etc.) and I think it was a brand new one. Can you recommend a certain version and a file/link I can download from to re-install this so it will work?
I believe that may solve both the crash and WinDVD not playing.

Warm Regards to all and Thanks.

No,actually both are good recorders. Most people have no problems with either.I think it is down to system configuration and/or software conflicts.;)

@Botchka.A couple of ideas.

Make sure DMA is enabled. If using VIA chipset use the drivers that were installed with XP.If you updated the drivers use the uninstall option, then enable DMA.

Mismatched aspi drivers will cause problems too.Use Forceaspi, use the kill aspi.bat option to remove the aspi files. Then reinstall the aspi with the new aspi files.4.60(1021) are the best troublefree drivers.

Lastly remove DVDx copy if you still have problems,it looks like the common software for everybody with trouble.

Yes,works fine with XP.

If all else fails try contacting Pioneer, although it could be a long wait.;)

Did all - nothing helped

OK... here's what I did:

- killed and re-installed ASPI layer. Checked with ASPICHK and it looked all good
- Made sure DMA was enabled. By the way. In order to do that I had to uninstall Inter Application Accelarator... did that and DMA is enabled

Still no improvement:
- Still restarts whenever I asked to preview the split or copy with DVDXCopy
- Still will not play the DVDs with WinDVD. My LiteOn 163 works like a charm though - plays all movies. The A05 tries to play the movie, changes the screen resolution if necessary, says that it is going to play certain audio (as it finds on the disc) and then displays a black screen with the scroller not moving

So, I uninstalled DVDXCopy (had 1.4.1 installed) and ... still nothing.

I know the drive is OK cause it plays music and it worked fine reading and writing a CD (PSX) with CloneCD.

Oh well... if anyone thinks of anything new here... pls let me know.

Warm Regards

@ botchka

Perchance have you ensured you have the latest video, sound card and/or Direct X drivers installed properly? What IDE channel is your Pioneer DVR-105 connected to? Pioneer recommends having the DVR-105 installed as IDE secondary master. Have you ensured that you haven’t got a faulty IDE cable?

I recently purchased a CenDyne (Pioneer) DVR-105 and using SmartRipper and DVD2one have backed up 5 DVD’s and haven’t experienced any problems. I hope you get your Pioneer DVR-105 working properly.

Regards,
Coaster
