Warcraft is able to f**ck hardware. It crashed (blue screen of death) under Windows XP, and my motherboard got dead. I had to buy a new one.

Simple...lawsuits would easilly result! The DCMA does not allow destroying hardware. Besides, this game has been out for some time now and if this was happening we would have heard of many occurances by now.

It's possible that a Virus or Trojan could have been in your WCIII image. did you make your own copy or did you get it online virtual_web?

Most likely it's one of those strange coincidences. You know...shite happens :(

I've not downloaded the game, I've copied it from the original. It killed my MSI K7TPro2-A motherboard! I had to buy a new one. I was playing Warcraft 3, and the 1st Undead level was completed, when a blue screen appeared on XP and the computer restarted itself. I shutted down and when I turned it back on it didn't worked anymore, the display was not receiving any signal.
I tried another processor (AMD Duron@800MHz), another graphics card, another memory module, and nothing...
I went to my local computer store and buyed a new board (75€).

Ok, play WC3 with your new MOBO and i will bet it will not destroy your MOBO again. WC3 has been out for a while now and your the only one who claims it will detroy your MOBO.
My copy works just fine.

I personally doubt that any software could destroy your hardware :)
And I am pretty sure that this wouldn´t happen misstakenly ..
So, I guess you mobo just had a bad day ...
Please do not bitch at WC3 ! It is the best game I have ever seen ! :)

@virtual_web:

I can't believe that something similar happened to you too.

A month ago my MSI K7T Pro-2 A, fried 2 processors under a recently installed copy of Win XP Pro.

It was running rock stable for more that year and a half under Win 98 SE; then I installed Win XP, and when I was downloading a file, bum!, BSOD, and my Athlon 1 Ghz was fried. So, I buyed a Duron 1.1 Ghz and a week later, running SETI@Home, BSOD again, my new processor was fried too!
If this is some sort of very odd incompatibility between Win XP and MSI, I will have then more reasons to hate Micro$oft!
Looks like Win XP messed with the motherboard BIOS or something! Odd. I don't know what to do now, if I buy a new mobo in case it is damaged, or try again with Win98, with the risk of frying the processor again... :(

i have an msi board and have not had any misfortune.

it's impossible for a game to break your motherboard and you can always protect your bios by making it write disabled if you are paranoid about that.

it's a funny put down.

if you had been playing settlers 1 on a an amiga emulator and it happend midgame would you be blaming that? it's just a coincedance. there could be 100 other reasons why the computer went dead. the most likely cause is a power surge or a short circuit somewhere. that's far more plausible then warcraft 3 breaking your pc.

The game didn't killed my motherboard on purpose, but a similar issue occured some time ago. The same thing occured, but I took my Duron of the socket and then put it back again, and it just worked again.
This time was worst, it killed my motherboard. It may be connected with the Windows XP BlueScreenOfDeath...

Of course it can't be the game, but is very similar to my case, the lost of the video signal... the BSOD... WinXP... the same mobo... mmm, I will never install WinXP again I guess, just in case. I will only use Win98SE, Win2k and Linux.
BTW, virtual_web, I guess you have a tension stabilizer. I didn't had one momentarily when it crashed, so... Anyway, in case it was something else than a current shock,(my mobo still works, but fries CPUs; the PSU is fine) this is really strange and frustrating. I still have to test if the voltage regulator isn't damaged or something.

I had my issues with MSI-Boards too
Buy something that's worth it's money - ABIT or ASUS is da better choice
IMHO yo can't blame WinXP if da Mobo manufacturs doesn't do their homework

sorry dude, but i aint taking adivce on motherboards from a guy who thinks a game blew his up.

no probs with my msi board at all.

GigaByte motherboards are the best ones right now. I will never buy a MSI motherboard anymore. And ASUS, no way...
In the past, I would have agreed with you bud. I have built over a hundred Gigabyte board systems in the past and rarely did I ever see them come back. However, Gigabyte seems to be getting rather dodgey lately.

Case in point...the GA-7VRXP motherboard. It has been proven to be one of the buggiest of the current KT333 mobos. All of the revision 1.x 7VRXP have poor (cheap) power regulators on the AGP port. Subsequently, most late model vid cards (Geforce 3&4 Radeon 9xxx...ie, power hungry vid cards) crash and lockup on this board. Funny...Gigabyte went to all the trouble of putting a nice shiny sticker on the box and across the AGP port certifying Geforce 4 support.

At first, Gigabyte denied it was a problem, but later offered to "fix" by reworking (relsoldering) the board and returning it to you. They quietly put out a revision 2.0 board that fixed the problem (with a better power regulator), but refused to exchange a 1.x for a 2.0 on an RMA. Instead of recalling, they flooded the market with unfixed 1.x boards hoping that customers were still using older vid cards and wouldn't notice. Of course they offered to fix it if the customer complained... but since the RMA takes 2-3 weeks turn around, you are now stuck with it with no recourse to return it to the retailer (within their usual 30 day return policy) if you are still unhappy.

And to make it worse, this is not the first time they have had AGP power regulation problems. They have had two different KT266 mobos with the same problems last year.

Go to amdmb.com...specifically the Gigabyte section and you can read about all those lucky GA-7VRXP owners who found out too late. I was lucky...I found out within 30 days and returned that sucker back to the retailer.

Ironically...if you look at amdmb.com the latest ASUS and MSI are the most trouble free and least bitched at boards on the Forum.

Electro-Static Discharge Gentlemen,
I'll bet my images that you have also installed some new hardware or MOBO along with XP. Am I right? Did you have on a wrist strap that was grounded to the PC frame? Computer guts are extremely fragile. I would expect ESD to kill your H/W a lot faster than Warcraft or XP.
