What is the est way to backup episodic DVD's

As the heading suggests I'm looking at the best way to make backup copies of episodic DVD's such as my original The Osbournes Series one, and Star Trek: The Next Generation collection.

Can I use a program like DVD-Shrink to do this or do I have to use DVD-X-Copy (which I'm not really over with).

The other problem that I see with a few of the all in one programs is that if I can do the discs it seems that they will put one original DVD over 2 DVD's on backup. As I'm sure you can understand I don't want this to happen as it makes the whole process more expensive, and more storage space.

Can anyone give me a hand in this I would be very thankful if I can recieve some help.

You can try Shrink or DVD2One, both should work. Both backup to 1 DVDR and not split it over 2 disks.

You will get some horrible result with Star Trek the Next Gen series though. They are mixed progressive and interlaced & with field order changing from scene to sceeen. Season 1 Disk3 2nd, 3rd & 4th episodes if I can remember right, is particularly difficult.

I used dvd2svcd with CCE (as per my tutorial posted here) to encode all 7 series of TNG ( total of 48 dvdr's !), results are as good as the originals and I even used the intro flyby sequence and their menus. All extras on disk 7 of each series were also backed-up.

If your serious about backing up your ST TNG series and want to retain their quality (I tried dvd2one and IC7, both a waste of time here) then let me know and I can run you through what is needed more that I say in the Tutes.

Chickenman if you could help me do that it would be great I have set my settings of the CCE and DVD2SVCD to what you said, I did the green mile with it and seemed really good.

Any help you have to offer is fantastic mate, Ihave read all your work and think of you as a bit of a guru!

I already have a ChickenMan T-Shirt. What I need is a good supply of stubby holders though.

@ XR8Falcon06, flatery will get you everywhere

Okay back to the subject. All the TNG dvd's have 4 eps each except the last od each seroes which have 2 plus 6-8 extras. I'll deal with the 4 eps disks first.

Rip each episode off the dvd in IFO mode to its own folder (I just name them 1, 2, 3 & 4 for simplicity). Treat each as a movie and process as per the DVD to DVDR Tute (I did all mine in Batch Mode) except for:

1. Set in the Bitrate tab the top line for )-50min, the CD size should be set to 1100 ( a 1/4 of 4400 ) since there are 4 episodes on the dvd.

2. In the Advanced options of CCE, untick ALL MPEG2 Video settings except for "DVD Compliance".

3. For Disk3 Season 1, in the Encoder Tab, set the Field Order to "Bottom Field First (Field B)"

The original opening flyby and animated menu is stored in the VTS_01_0.VOB file. This can be loaded into DVD2AVI (delete all others that load in also) and then use the slider to finad the sequence start and finish. Save Projuct, make sure Audio is set to Demux and Track 2. Track 1 is German. I save the Intro sequence, then repeat and save the Menu part. Load the Intro.d2v file into TMPGEnc, load in PAL DVD Template, then in settings set the Motion Search Precision to "Highest Quality (very slow)" and the Rate Control Mode to Manual VBR and set bitrate to be 5000. Ok. Make sure Stream Type is set to "ES (Video Only)" remove anything in the audio line and hit Start. In a min or 2 it will have produced a *.m2v file for you and dvd2avi gave you the audio. Repeat for the Menu.

Author in Mastro. Create a timeline for Movie!, Movie2, Movie3, Movie4, Movie5 and the Menu.

Load the Menu.m2v and menu.ac3 into the Menu. Draw a square around each of the 4 episode numbers (these are now your buttons), in the Menu Advanced settings tab, hit the Auto Assign button, then in Playback control hit Loop, then in Color Mapping tab, click the small Brown button with 8 on it and change to colur of choice. I used Blue at a setting of 5.

Now load all the 4 episodes and their ac3 audio tracks into Maestro as per Tute but now move Episode 1 to Movie1 timeline, Episode 2 to Movie2 timeline, etc... and load their Chapters file in. Load the small Intro movie & ac3 into Movie5 and mark a chapter as close to end of the movie as possible.

Now comes the fun part, setting up the Connections. For First Play set it to Movie5 (the intro), menu to Menu1 (Button 1). Now for the End Action for the last chapter in Movie5, set this to Menu1 (Button 1) - This means start playing the Intro movie and when it ends automatically run the Menu. For the End Action of the last chapter on Movie1, set that to Menu1 (Button 1). End Action of the last chapter on Movie2, set that to Menu1 (Button 2), etc. For Menu1:Button 1, set this to Movie1:Chapter 00:00:00:00 For Menu1:Button 2, set this to Movie2:Chapter 00:00:00:00, etc.

Compile. You then end up with a dvd at about 4.30gig with a starting intro flyby sequence, then a selection menu that loops until you make a selection. When you make a selection it plays the episode and when it finishes it jumps back to the Menu ready for you to select another. All original menus, original chapters and almost original movie (quaility wise) with 6ch ac3 audio only.

I hope I havent left anything out. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for that mate I will give it ago and see how I go, I just hope that I can understand everything you have layed out for me correctly.

I find it easy to make good quality rips of single movies now I just ahve to get it right doing this way. I invested in a DVD-RW the other day so that I could practice before I burn.

Thank you again Chickenman I understand that you must be busy helping out the other members and I am very grateful for the help you have given me.

This is not a warez forum.

How was that?

Probably should add a bit more info. Just because Sprue may not sell Maestro any more (due to being owned by Apple) does not mean that the software is no longer copyrighted and therefor no different than requesting a copy of win XP or any other software.

Also, you should proably check out the rules here.

WHOA! thats complicated I copied all 47-49 TNG disks in 3 days at the most

just use dvdclone and anydvd

works like a charm. takes about 35-42 mintues per disc with all menus and features.

all you have to do is insert dvd and hit CLONE DVD (with menus) and then after about 22 minutes it will ask for a blank disc pop that in and VOILA your done :)

cheers

As Chickenman said the quality is not as good, but I have tried CloneDVD but have never got it working at all. Not sure what Im doing wrong, I ripp the movie with DVDDecrypter and it still gives an error message.

The quality is EXACTLY the same for me as using dvd shrink for the same size. We have to remember that we are ripping 190 minutes of video with 6 channel surround sound. And the newer episodes ie season 4-5-6-7 look much better then season 1-2-3 because as the show took off they upgraded their hardware and had MUCH better quality video.

DVD clone has worked fo rme without a hiccup, on win2k and winxp, as long as anydvd is installed.
I urge all of you to download them both right now. They have a 30 day FULLY operational version available for both programs. You got nothing to lose guys.

cheers and good luck

I have full working version of the program but have not been able to get it working it just keeps throwing up errors at me, Chickenman's method is a little bit more involved but I have gotten awesome results from it.

I hear DVD clone is a great program I just need to work out what Im doing wrong.

I am currently doing the Star Trek TNG series as I type, and DVD X Copy Xpress 3.0.1 works great for me under copy whole DVD mode.

I personally dont like the nag screen the program uses, so i use slippery's method for removing it (http://www.cdrbase.com/showthread.php?threadid=29973 ) using IFO edit and a small change I posted to his original instructions. So far, the DVD's are flawless and the quality is so good, it is difficult to tell that there was any change from the original.

Its silly easy, and the total time from inserting the movie to my copy is about an hour. Not too bad, and it is still all accomplished in about 3 clicks of the mouse.

lets see if i can help

im not sure where i got this method from but a big thanks go out to whoever wrote it.
i had a huge problem backing up "band of brothers" for the longest time.
2 episodes per dvd. after days of reading and trying stuff out i came across the following method. hell it might be a couple of guides i picked from.
anyway here it goes
tools:
dvd decypter
dvd2one
copytodvd

first i made to folders on desktop
1. decrypted
2. newbackup

put original dvd in recorder and open up dvddycrypter
decrypter should read the dvd and then bring up the vob info in the window.
then i go to view select all
and then i decrypt the dvd to the decrypted folder run time about 30 min

when finished i open up dvd2one (SELECT FULL DISC) NOT MOVIE ONLY locate my decrypted folder and then compress the files into my newbackup folder run time 30 min

when finished finally i open up copytodvd and select the file from the newbackup folder and burn to dvd run time 30 min

and presto a backup version of my dvd same quality and all
i have never had an issue with none of my backups with this method.

i wish i new where i got this method from because they deserve a big thank you

hope this helps someone

p.s. run times could vary

thank you
and forgive my punctuation
sincerly

I agree with you. I can't get clone dvd going, but find most of the others fine. Besides, Clone does not do the level9 dvd's.

I'm using this and the dvd-dvdr tuts for my Stargate dvds.

Using DVD2SVCD 1.2.1 b3 & CCE 266.01.07 (which I don't think are the problem) & XP Home.

When Scenarist (2.7.0.0241) is encoding, it falls over with

Error Can't encode. The bits compressed for one line is more than 1440.[Subpicture Encoder]

Now I've checked the subtitle files and one hasn't been put in my Encoded Files dir, so it must be that.

Where do I change the 1440 - can I?

Any ideas?

Sorry I cant help with the Scenarist error as it has worked for me EVERY time. All I can suggest is to manually author the *.mpv and *.ac3 files with Maestro, DVDLab, etc as thats all Scenarist is doing.
